This is an action packed episode. The In-Laws are visiting, kids and wife are home and distractions are all over the place.


This is a 2 part podcast. What I wanted to do is give you a couple ideas on why some people just can't lose weight.I am making the assumption that you are working out regularly and eating somewhat clean. If you are doing that and still struggle with weight loss, we need to talk. The focus should then be on sleep and whether you are actually repairing yourself at night or screwing yourself up. So this episode is all about why you need a good sleep cycle and the effect it has on hormones.

But first I wanted to thank a number of people who are kind enough to follow my podcast. Thanks to everyone who listens. Bigger thanks to everyone who clicks the follow button and huge props to the very kind people leaving Itunes reviews.

Next up is the issue of dry-aged beef and steakhouses. I will say this as plain as I can. I have never left one of these places full or happy with the quality of steak. Maybe the rich like these places because the moldy semi-rotten smell of the "aged" steaks reminds them of the smell of old money. Dark, stuffy mahogony-lined restaurants are no place to get a good meal. In this episode I not only tell you about 3 great steakhouses but I tell you how to make a better steak.

So really instead of the 1 good piece of advice I try to give each week you whould have a shopping cart full of ideas to think about until the next episode!

Episode 42: How Meditation Can Change the Shape of Your Brain

This is a pretty good podcast if I do say so. Anyone who knows me or has listened to this podcast knows that I am fascinated by the brain and how it works. 


But this is a tricky subject to discuss because you have to consider the idea that you are not in charge of your brain. For example, if you were really in charge of your brain why can't you tell it that you need to lose 50 pounds so make that chocolate cake look disgusting. A nice brain would do that for you. Instead your brain is constantly at work making connections, coming to conclusions and routing your life for you whether you realize it or not.

(If you happen to be high, don't read the following sentence because it will freak you out.) So in essence you need to tell your brain, through your brain to rewire itself to stop making bad connections and evaluations and make better ones. If you don't your brain just goes on it's merry way making haphazard connections.

That is why you need to practice some sort of control over the brain. Meditation has always been brought forth as a way to rewire your connections and change the way you look at life. A way to bring peace and understanding.  

This new study from Harvard actually now has proof through the use of MRI's that you can change the structural shape of your brain through meditation. So this podcast is about how you can go about bringing both physical and mental change to your life. Not goofy Deepak Chopra stuff but stuff that is tangible and especially techniques you can use to get better strength and fat loss results.

Also there is a new segment called "You Disgust Me". The inaugural episode focues on these internet A-holes who are harassing the Food babe. Whether you buy into the Food babe philosophy or not, she is trying to do a good thing by exposing the strange and bizarre world of chemistry,,,,,er I mean modern food. If you don't like her, don't read her blog. If you want to argue with her bring some facts to the table. But don't threaten her or try and demean her. Adults making fun of her name? Really?

Episode 41: Crappy Christmas Presents and the Nutrition Wrap-up

I don't mean to be cranky about this time of year always brings out the crappy Christmas Fitness presents. I take a look at the Brookstone catalog and lo and behold there is another "Biggest Loser" trainer hawking stuff you don't need. 


If you really want to waste $200 on a handheld massager then go ahead. If you want to spend $2 on a device that is way better than a massager....then I guess you better have a listen.

I also talk about why buying a cheap treadmill/elliptical/Bike is never a good idea. Hint: they aren't made well, you won't use it and/or it will break. But if you want to spend $200 Brookstones has a really bad idea of a bike you can buy.

Finally I take one last crack at telling you my nutrition philosophy and hopefully is makes you a little less stressed. I am not perfect at nutrition and I don't expect my clients to be. All you have to be is pretty good and that should work. See, doesn't that make you feel a little better?
