Good Lord, I can't get away from this stuff. I am now getting article after article in my inbox. Each worse than the last. When will this stop? I almost feel like the sole human squaring off against hundreds of zombies. The zombies have the numbers and I am armed only with a baseball bat of science.


My hope is we can get back to normal programming next week but this one was too good to pass up.

All I can tell you is that if these last 2 articles made sense to you, please don't listen to my podcast. I can't help you.

Episode 84: Mike’s in the Doghouse, Weekend Certifications and When Does 1,000 calories not equal 1,000 calories

Hey, welcome to episode 84. as you can see by there title there is a lot going on in this episode.
Yes I am in the doghouse. But should I be? If you ask me a question about fitness I will give you an answer. That is what I do. Here comes the tricky part. If you don't like my answer should you get mad at me? My wife certainly did but don't get mad at me, blame evolution.
 
Topic 1: I said it before and I will say it again. A slow walk is not exercise. It is a stroll. If you go and walk around the mall it is a stroll. If you walk as fast as you can and you are breathing hard and sweating, that is exercise. Big difference. Walking the dog is very relaxing but it is not exercise. It doesn't mean it isn't important, it just means it should not and cannot count it as exercise. But if you are just starting out and are breathing hard going around the block, then you are exercising my friend. Doctors are now telling patients to walk because they are desperate to get any kind of movement out of them. Technically a stroll is better than nothing but not by much.

Topic 2: Just got an email from a guy doing weekend certifications. I may be in the only industry where you can go from a guy off the street to certified master trainer in 2 days. Well I guess they have those mail order karate places too so I don't feel that bad. Think of all the time and money I wasted taking courses to become a master trainer when I could have just shown up at this seminar with a cup of coffee and a bag of donuts and walked out with a certification!

I hear what you are saying. How could a magazine such as Cosmopolitan, which is devoted to cutting edge nutritional articles, publish an article that is wrong? Wrong in my opinion but I am the one in charge here. Well, here is my teaser. You will just have to listen to it to see why 1,000 calories doesn't always equal 1,000 calories. 

Episode 81 One of the worst articles I have ever come across

Hi everyone,

I try to be a positive individual. I really try hard. Look at my website and you won't find a negative thing written or said because that is essentially me. But even I have my limits. 
I have been trying to be more active on twitter. When people follow me I generally follow them back. One site in particular tweets such bad information to their people that I have a moral obligation to at leat present a rebuttal.

The offending article this week is from GQ and here is the link. http://www.gq.com/story/old-proof-your-body

To be fair people can have differing opinions about fitness but this article about "old-proofing" is so wacky I just had to talk about it. If this was an April fool's joke from GQ, then please accept my apology.

Episode 80:Orthorexia, Entemann’s Donuts and Putting Nutrition in Perspective.

Well another episode of rants. But what do you expect in a world gone crazy? You know those people who eat really clean? Almost sterile clean? Of course you do because they are always telling you how good they eat. Obsessing about every calorie and ingredient. Apparently do they get to be judgmental and aggravating to the rest of us....they get their own disease. Not yet but it is coming soon. Orthorexia is a condition of people obsessed with eating healthy. But the ones getting it seem to be the "experts" who have been beating everyone else up for the way they eat.


I can understand it in the sense that our food supply is really suspect at times. It makes sense to do a little research in what goes in your mouth. I don't know, you make the call on this one.

Episode 79: A World Gone Crazy. Crazy Crossfit, Crazy Asthma story and more Craziness

There was a full moon last night but it might as well have been a full moon all month. It is official, the world has gone crazy and I offer 5 Examples in this podcast.

1. The presidential race is underway and the leading characters look like cartoons.
World gone crazy.
2. There is a 30 minute crossfit show on tv that offers this as a workout.
15 toes to bars 
10 deadlifts with 115 pounds
5 snatches
Do that more 9 minutes then max out a clean and press.
Stupid routine, not well thought out, dangerous and ineffective. Again, a sign that the....
World gone crazy.
3. The Grid league has a preseason and a post season but no regular season matches. Let me hear you.
A World Gone Crazy.
4. An article in Shape magazine about asthma that doesn't have anything to do with asthma. Link here.
A World gone pharmaceutical....and Crazy.
5. Finally, a workout so dumb it rivals the aforementioned Crossfit workout.
Whew, luckily you can depend on me to bring some sanity to the table.
